What is Ashwagandha?

Scientific Name: Withania somnifera, known commonly as Ashwagandha or winter cherry, is an evergreen shrub in the Solanaceae or Nightshade family that grows in India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. Several other species in the genus Withania are morphologically similar.

Where does Ashwagandha come from?

The plant, particularly its root powder, has been used for centuries in traditional Indian medicine for stress relief and relaxation. This stress reduction is very important for athletes.

Who needs it and what are some symptoms of deficiency?

Since Ashwagandha is not a recommended or required daily nutrient there is no deficiency associated with it usage.

Ashwagandha is an Indian herb that is part of a family of plants called Adaptogens. Adaptogens are so-called because they help your body functionally adapt when it is under intense physical or mental stress by improving your resistance to stress as well as your ability to perform.

Ashwagandha contains chemicals that help calm the brain, reduce swelling, lower blood pressure, and alter the immune system. Since ashwagandha is traditionally used as an adaptogen, it is used for many conditions related to stress. Adaptogens for athletes are believed to help the body resist the physical and improve mental capacities under stress.

For athletes Ashwagandha will also reduce harmful inflammation by increasing antioxidant activity in your body, helping to counter the damaging effects of sustained, high-intensity physical exercise. It too has the added benefit of also improving muscle growth to specifically target skeletal muscle recovery.

Ashwagandha increases luteinizing hormone (LH) and protects the body from oxidative stress, which increases testosterone levels. Scientific studies prove Ashwagandha improves testosterone levels in men. Ashwagandha also improves muscle recovery-growth, reduces anxiety-stress, and supports brain health.

What are the possible side effects of Ashwagandha? Taking Ashwagandha by mouth for up to 3 months seems to be safe. Large doses can lead to an upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, and, in rare cases, liver problems. Ashwagandha is probably unsafe for pregnant women because it might increase the risk of miscarriage.

They could interact with sedatives, blood thinners, thyroid supplements, drugs that suppress the immune system, and drugs for anxiety, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Ashwagandha might also interact with supplements that cause sleepiness, like St. John's wort, kava, valerian, and others.

Ashwagandha can increase immune response, so it's recommended that individuals with autoimmune diseases (such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, or other conditions) avoid taking Ashwagandha.

Recent Studies

Ashwagandha has life-extending properties. Research studies at universities in Japan show that this herb regenerates nerve cells and dendrite growth throughout the brain and body. This power makes Ashwagandha a frontline treatment for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer and Parkinson Disease.

Researchers continue to study ashwagandha's efficacy in improving strength and muscle size. One study found participants experienced increased speed and strength. Another study observed an increase in muscle power, alongside a lower body fat percentage and reduced cholesterol levels when Ashwagandha was consumed.

Although Ashwagandha continues to be used in herbalism and sold as a dietary supplement, there is insufficient scientific evidence that it is safe or effective for treating any health condition or disease. Although allot of studies lock very promising we are still only at the beginning of understanding the powerful effect of this ancient herb.
